The England Women’s Red Roses continue to demonstrate the growth and power of women’s rugby on the global stage. The Women’s Rugby World Cup final was played just a couple of weeks ago in front of a world-record crowd of 42,579 at Eden Park, New Zealand’s National Stadium, and the England team just narrowly missed out on raising the trophy. But the impact of their amazing tournament will be felt for years to come! They have made England proud and inspired a generation of young girls and women to pick up the sport. At a grassroots level, the growth of women’s rugby is tangible and Belsize is a great example. The Women’s squad is growing rapidly week on week, with the team now able to regularly field two teams – making us one of the largest women’s clubs in London. This weekend was another brilliant display of Belsize Women’s development, as we hosted a double header at our Regent’s Park home.
Belsize 1st team faced Beccehamian Ladies in a league game. After a tricky first few minutes camped a few metres from their try line, Belsize managed to turn it on and make the game their own. Utilising space across the field, the team demonstrated their hunger to win, smashing through the Beccehamian defence, getting the ball out wide and using the speed of the wingers to bring it home. Tries from Hannah, Mireia, Sarah H, Eleanor and Becca, alongside conversions from Eleanor and Becca brought the score to a tasty 29-0 – and that was at 60 minutes before the game was called early. Fantastic runs up the pitch, coupled with the strength and determination of the forwards meant the win was a full team effort and every single girl that played came away proud of their performance. Players of the match went to Scrum Half Mireia for her consistency and insight, to Prop Ellie for her terrifying tackles and to Hooker Abbie for her power in the scrum.
Datchworth’s development team came to meet Belsize 2nd team who were also itching for a run around. With a few players new to Belsize, there was plenty to learn, and the team demonstrated their skills with amazing 3-women scrums and strong line outs. The ladies were able to find the breaks in the defence line which allowed for a huuuge score of 78-14 to Belsize! With tries coming from Albany x1, Cecile x3, Elin x1, Jess x2, Sarah x2,, Roisin x2, and Ruth x1, along with conversions from Albany, Cecile, Sarah, Roisin and Elin, the girls absolutely smashed it out of the park! The attack intensity from the Belsize Women was on point and bought them the game, with pointers to work on in defence moving forward. It was a fun afternoon, with the team learning from mistakes and improving on structure and stability in the second half. Scrum Half Cecile came away with Woman of the Match from Belsize for her never-ending pressure and managing the team during the game.
Well done to all who played this weekend, making Belsize proud with a clean sweep!
