At Belsize Park RFC, the mental and physical wellbeing of our players is of paramount importance. As we approach preseason training, we will be working closely with England Rugby’s COVID-19 guidance to determine the appropriate way forward to maintain the safety of our players.
The RFU has announced three possible windows for our 1st XV season to begin (10th October, 28th November and 6th February) and three possible models for the league structure depending on the resulting length of the season that each start date affords.
The windows for 12 team merit leagues are later (21st November, 16th January and 20th February respectively).
For our 2nd XV, who participate in the 10 team merit leagues, the windows are later (5th Dec, 23rd Jan and 20th Feb).
For our 3rd, 4th, 5th and women’s teams in the 8 team leagues, then the windows are later again (30th Jan, 27th Feb and 20th Mar).
Once the government announces the lifting of restrictions which would allow rugby to commence, then we shall aim to start our preseason 7 weeks ahead of this, as we have done in all previous seasons. Therefore, one can assume that our earliest start for preseason is likely to be the first week in August, which will give us ample time to prepare.
It may be that the RFU will bring forward the window start dates for the merit table and women’s leagues. Regardless however, we would expect to start preseason as guided above and will have a longer calendar of friendly fixtures leading into the start of the season.
We shall look to make further announcements in due course, subject to medical, government, and RFU advice.
